You love to hear the story, again and again
of how it all got started, way back when
the monument.. is right in your face..
sit and listen for a while to the name of the place..”
– MC Shan “The Bridge” (produced by Marley Marl)
Those immortal words said in 1985 by MC SHAN kicked off a musical legacy that so far has lasted 30 years. Taking up only 6 blocks of New York City, the Queensbridge Houses housing project, known to locals as “Queensbridge Projects”, is the largest housing project in the United States and has produced countless hip-hop legends and classic songs. Starting with pioneers like Marley Marl, Roxanne Shante, MC Shan, Craig G, Poet and Tragedy and later nurturing the street-savvy skills of Nas, Mobb Deep and Cormega, Queensbridge is credited as the origin of some of the all-time best MCs lyrically, technically, and conceptually.
